Harris Wins USSOCOM Order

Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a leader in the public safety and professional communication market, received an order worth $81 million for its Falcon III wideband tactical radio. The order is a part of a $400 million deal with Harris Corporation, where the company will support the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) to upgrade its equipment.

As a part of the deal, Harris will provide USSOCOM with its Falcon III AN/PRC-117G radios, which facilitates high bandwidth communications and supports video streaming, and faster voice and data transmission across a battlefield. According to the company, the radio is much lighter than traditional radios, thereby significantly reducing a soldier?s load and offering high degree of mobility and security.

Recently, Harris declared its third quarter 2012 financial results with both revenue and EPS surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate. In the reported quarter, the RF Communication segment, which includes Tactical Radio Communications and Public Safety and Professional Communications, won new orders worth $629 million with $534 million in the Tactical Radio Communications business. Total order book in the Tactical Radio Communication segment stood at $717 million.

Falcon III tactical radio is gaining popularity within the Defense sector of several countries and the company expects to win many more deals in that field. We believe that the USSOCOM deal proves Harris Corporation?s ability to support the current and future public safety requirements. Tactical Radios and Public Safety and Professional Communications together provide an opportunity of more than $6 billion.

In spite of winning consistent contracts along with a strong order book, Harris faces stiff competition from companies like Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA), General Dynamics Corp. (NYSE:GD) and Raytheon Co. (NYSE:RTN) which also provide high-end public safety communications system.

Recommendation: We are maintaining our long-term Neutral recommendation on Harris Corporation. Currently Harris Corporation has a Zacks #3 Rank, implying a short-term hold rating on the stock.

Discover How To Transform Your Business with Article Marketing

Even though article marketing is not hard, so many (most) who have tried it have not done well with it. This form of marketing is evergreen, and while many have failed at it there have been some who have found great success with it. The world and the internet are driven by content, and that is how you can use it to your advantage if you know how.

The balance of this article will reveal a couple of article marketing secrets that can do something for your business.

Your articles will have the potential to be home-runs if all of them provide excellent content in the form of useful information. One of the most powerful skills you can have as an article marketer is knowing how to presell with the written word. Your conversions will be poor if you include any kind of words that belong on a sales page. Basically what you are doing with your articles is making an objective presentation on whatever topic, and then hopefully the reader will click through to your site for more information. There is a particular pre-sell approach that works well, and that is to perform a review of a product. Be careful to avoid only speaking in positive terms about the product because the review will seem biased in favor of the product. You always want to create a great first impression, and that is why providing value in your articles is of paramount importance.

You always should repurpose your articles and use them in other places besides directories. You can easily break them down and use them as content for emails in your autoresponder messages. Articles are great because you can leverage them in almost any way you can think of. It is true that very many experienced online marketers know this little trick for repurposing articles into content to be use somewhere else. Ultimately, your aim is to use content to grow your business, whether you use your articles this way or any other way.

You always want to make sure your articles are focused on just one topic. More than one topic will totally confuse people. There are many things that are important with article writing, and focused content writing is one of them. It all really has to do with making your articles easier to be understood. If you do that with your articles, one topic per article, then you will obviously have better results. If you write a good outline for your article, then that will help you to stay on track. A lack of focus means you are allowing your mind to wander while you are writing, and that can be very dangerous to conversions. These are the kinds of easy and powerful article marketing strategies that have already been shown to be highly effective. It is possible to get noticed and be different in many ways, and that is what you should always try to do. Make sure your articles only contain high quality content that provides good value to people.

It's Interesting to See How the Bankruptcy Stigma Does Not Apply to ...

Recently, we've seen many household names filing bankruptcy as a way to restructure their debt. What's interesting is how Americans perceive a business filing bankruptcy versus an individual filing for bankruptcy. When an individual enters into bankruptcy, there is a stigma that follows them as if they were a failure. Many question the person's integrity and their lifestyle that caused the bankruptcy filing. On the other side of the coin, when a big corporation files for bankruptcy, it's just good business. Not many really care whether it's wiping out small businesses that are vendors to that corporation or wiping out the pension for long-term employees. The bottom line is, people don't want to see that name fail at whatever cost.

Businesses use a bankruptcy attorney as a form of strong-arming unions into changing labor agreements and getting vendors to reduce their debt amounts.

Just the threat of filing bankruptcy and having a bankruptcy attorney contact the creditors is usually enough. If the creditors won't budge, bankruptcy is put on the table and if necessary it is filed. Most businesses file Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure their debt and lobby the court to let them out of contracts that they feel are detrimental to recovery of the company. If the company cannot restructure, filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy might be necessary to liquidate all the assets and pay the creditors. Many times creditors would rather push for the Chapter 7 bankruptcy if the company has large amounts of assets to s ell, like real estate. In this case, they are more likely to be paid for their debts then in restructuring.

There have been some interesting bankruptcy filings over the recent years like Kmart. In the case of Kmart, the shareholders got wiped out by the bankruptcy court, while the assets were liquidated for a small amount. After all the dust cleared, the group that bought up the assets profited billions of dollars. This is an example of how corporate bankruptcy wiped out the small guy and benefited the investment groups.

When all this goes on, still not many people seem to look down on the corporation filing bankruptcy. It's either; they don't understand it or they just don't care. I guess it makes better gossip to talk about your brother-in-law or your neighbor's bankruptcy filing and how they don't know how to manage their money. It seems like a double standard to me and as more Americans are filing for bankruptcy these days, hopefully more will understand to the plight of those having financial difficulties.

PFT: Polamalu thinks kids should play football

Domonique FoxworthAP

The NFL and NFLPA have agreed to a labor deal that will carry the game through at least nine more seasons without a lockout or a strike.? But the presence of a labor contract doesn?t guarantee labor peace.

Over the past couple of months, the relationship between the NFL and NFLPA has deteriorated, with more and more points of contention emerging between the parties.? It actually started not long after the Collective Bargaining Agreement was signed, given the failure of the parties to proceed with a fairly clear commitment to conduct HGH testing.

It?s gotten worse in recent weeks, fueled by the Saints? bounty case and exacerbated by the union?s recent collusion claim.? Look for further deterioration to come.

?There are always going to be situations where our interests don?t align and we?re going to fight tooth and nail,? NFLPA president Domonique Foxworth tells NFL Network?s Albert Breer.? ?And we respect each other afterwards in those situations.?

NFLPA executive direct DeMaurice Smith was more blunt during a Thursday press conference:? ?Cartels do what cartels will do when left unchecked.?

It?s important for the NFLPA to be vigilant, even in times of supposed labor peace.? And with a former litigator running the union, it?s to be expected that the union?s interests will from time to time be pursued and defended via litigation.

Still, underlying any arguments or lawsuits or debates is the fact that, now more than ever, the NFL and the NFLPA are business partners.? They share every dollar that comes through the cash register, and so they should refrain from taking action against each other that could in any way reduce the total dollars generated.

The collusion claim, for example, could in theory attract the attention of Congress, which could decide to take action against the NFL?s antitrust exemption for broadcast purposes.? Which in turn would inflict major damage on the interests of the league and the interests of the players.

Of the tooth-and-nail fighting, Foxworth says that ?we respect each other afterwards.?? But it?s even more important to respect each other during.? And that means making claims and raising defenses to claims not on a knee-jerk or nothing-to-lose basis but only after carefully considering the impact of the proposed activity on the bigger picture.

The claims made in the new collusion case will make it harder for the NFL and the NFLPA to resolve future differences amicably, because the NFL will now fear that the NFLPA will not honor the documents that purport to resolve and release certain legal claims.? In turn, the fact that the NFL apparently engaged in collusion during the uncapped year (regardless of whether the claims were waived by the new CBA) will make it harder for the NFLPA to trust the NFL on pretty much anything.

That?s what the two sides should be aspiring to restore:? trust.? They can agree and they can disagree and they can agree to disagree and they can disagree to disagree, but if they can?t trust each other, the relationship never will be as strong as it could or should be.

Answer by Fyre & Reign
The best vitamins that I?ve ever found are by Standard Process. They?re all natural and easily absorbed/used by the human body.

Naturopathic doctors and chiropractors sell them. It?s not MLM. You have to be in the health field to sell them but you should look into them.

There?s a naturopathic doctor that gives health quizzes on the Net for $ 5 to tell you which products you need:

Can I Find A Rental If I Have A Very Low Income? | REALTOR.com ...

questions

Q: I have very low income, about $1100.00 a month and I?m looking to get an apartment for my son and I. I?m just wondering how I can accomplish this. Also my potential roommate could add income to the apartment, but I don?t know if he can be on the lease because of his past criminal record from four years ago. It was a nonviolent felony. So what can we do? I appreciate any help.
?Vicki, Petersburg, VA

A: Dear Virginia, Most states have resources for low income people, I would recommend starting with finding out if they have any low income rental support. If you can find any rentals, it would be good to ask the landlord for an interview for you AND your roommate and tell the truth. The truth goes a long way and lies are just a hazard for the future. You will find someone who will listen. It would also be helpful to get letters of character recommendation from your work place(s), and to have a current copy (available for free from the credit reporting agencies one time a year) of your credit report(s), which will probably be a requirement for any rental.

Station grabs SpaceX Dragon ship

'Looks like we got us a dragon by the tail'

The California SpaceX company has seen its unmanned Dragon cargo ship attach successfully to the International Space Station (ISS).

Astronauts onboard the platform used its robotic arm to grasp the vehicle and connect it to a berthing port.

Dragon is the first commercial vessel to visit the space station.

It is also the first American ship to go to the orbiting laboratory since the US space agency (Nasa) retired its shuttles last year.

US astronaut Don Petit was inside the ISS at the controls of the Canadarm2.

He reached out with the robotic appendage and grabbed the Dragon capsule at 13:56 GMT (14:56 BST).

"Houston, looks like we got us a Dragon by the tail," he radioed to Nasa mission control in Texas.

The capture was met by applause from controllers, at the Nasa centre and at the SpaceX HQ in Hawthorne, California, where Dragon's flight is also being overseen.

Just under two hours later, Petit used the arm to position the Dragon on the ISS's Harmony connecting node. A good seal was eventually confirmed at 16:02 GMT (17:02 BST).

There were moments during the day when the proximity sensors used by Dragon to find its way to the station did not work quite as expected, and SpaceX CEO and chief designer, Elon Musk, admitted after the berthing that his team had come close to commanding an abort.

But he praised the SpaceX and Nasa controllers for finding a work-around.

"It's just a fantastic day and a great day for the country and for the world," he said.

"This really is going to be recognised as significantly historical step forward in space travel."

Up until now, the vehicles flying to the space station have been government-owned and operated.

But the US space agency (Nasa) is looking to save money that it can then re-invest in some of its other programmes far beyond Earth, at asteroids and at Mars.

And it believes this can be achieved by contracting out the more routine tasks in low-Earth orbit to the private sector.

To that end, Nasa is providing seed funding of approximately $800m to SpaceX and another company, Orbital Sciences Corporation, to help them develop new rocket and cargo vehicles.

Orbital's rocket is called Antares, and its freighter is known as Cygnus. The pair should go into space together for the first time before the end of the year.

Once these companies have proved the performance of their systems, they will start to receive lucrative ISS re-supply payments.

For SpaceX, its contract is valued at $1.6bn (?1bn) and calls for a minimum of 12 Dragon cargo missions to the ISS.

But freight is just the start. The ferrying of crews to and from the ISS will be the next service Nasa buys in.

SpaceX wants this business as well, and is developing the safety and life-support equipment that would allow Dragon to double up as an astronaut taxi.

The ISS crew will go inside Dragon on Saturday to unload its stores.

The astronauts will then pack the craft with 600kg of equipment and other items that need to be brought down to Earth.

Dragon is due to detach from the station next Thursday. It will re-enter the atmosphere and head for a splashdown via parachute in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southern California.

What could be the first of the 12 contracted servicing missions is set for September.

Bank of America, Barclays sell Archstone stake

(AP) ? Bank of America Corp. and Barclays Bank PLC are selling their stake in the apartment building owner Archstone to Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.'s bankruptcy estate for $1.58 billion.

The transaction disclosed Friday for the banks' 26.5 percent interest will give Lehman's estate full ownership of Archstone, an Englewood, Colo.-based company that owned all or part of 434 apartment communities in the U.S. and Europe as of the end of March.

"This transaction protects Lehman's substantial investment, provides stability and gives us control of Archstone's future," Lehman Chairman Owen Thomas said in a statement.

The move also blocks plans by Chicago-based Equity Residential, an apartment owner whose chairman is real estate magnate Sam Zell, to buy the stake.

Equity residential had offered in December to acquire the Archstone stake from BofA and Barclays for $1.33 billion. But Lehman exercised its right to match other offers for the stake and agreed Friday to purchase the remaining stake of Archstone.

Equity would get $150 million from the two banks and Lehman for walking away from the deal. BofA and Barclays will pay an $80 million breakup fee, while Lehman will pay a $70 million termination fee. If the Lehman purchase falls through, Equity's deal with BofA and Barclays will remain in effect.

The deal comes as the U.S. apartment market has been gaining strength, buoyed by a pickup in job growth that is encouraging more people who have been sharing housing with relatives or roommates to rent on their own.

On Thursday, the National Association of Realtors forecast that apartment vacancies nationwide will continue to decline over the next 12 months to 4.3 percent. Rates below 5 percent generally lead to rising rental rates, which means bigger profits for landlords like Archstone.

BofA and Barclays had joined Lehman in a $22.2 billion leveraged buyout of Archstone-Smith Trust in 2007. Initially, Lehman owned a 47 percent stake in privately held Archstone and the banks owned a 53 percent stake.

Lehman collapsed in 2008 in the biggest corporate bankruptcy in U.S. history.

The companies said Friday that the Lehman bankruptcy estate's transaction for the rest of Archstone is expected to close in the second quarter.

Shares of Bank of America was steady at $7.14 per share in trading 90 minutes before the market opening after rising as high as $7.20 earlier in premarket dealings.

Leroy was a superstar in the Real Estate business, producing three times the monthly business of his nearest coworker. He was a driven, highly competitive young man who saw his manager as getting in the way of even higher production.

Tension turned to irritability. Yelling and shouting followed. On the day he was fired, he shoved his manager in front of alarmed coworkers who reported his behavior to HR. Anger management classes were required, along with a one month interim, before reinstatement would be considered.

As this case example illustrates, workplace anger is costly to the employee the company, and coworkers. Studies show that up to 42% of employee time is spent engaging in or trying to resolve conflict. This results in wasted employee time, mistakes, stress, lower morale, hampered performance, and reduced profits and or service.

In fact, in 1993 the national Safe Workplace Institute released a study showing that workplace violence costs $4.2 billion ech year, estimating over 111,000 violent incidents. Further, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, about 500,000 victims of violent crime in the workplace lose an estimated 1.8 million workdays each year.

Clearly, poorly handled anger, frustration and resentment sabotage business productivity.
Was Leroy justified in his anger? What skills or tools should he learn to prevent future episodes? What could management have done to better handle the situation?

TOOL #1-RESPOND INSTEAD OF REACT
Using the tool of "respond instead of react," Leroy can clearly learn to control his behavior and communicate needs in a socially acceptable manner without disruptions to work and morale. The issue here is not if he was justified in being angry; it is how to best deal with normal angry feelings. A key ingredient to managing anger is learning to change "self-talk"? that internal dialog that creates or intensify angry feelings.

From a management perspective, proper anger management skills can enhance conflict resolution, promote personal growth in the employee, reduce employee stress and promote increased workplace harmony.

TOOL #2-STRESS MANAGEMENT
Leroy was clearly under a great deal of stress, much of which was self-imposed. Stress often triggers anger responses. Learning to effective deal with stress can help prevent anger outbursts, as well as reducing employee "burnout" and hampered performance. Managers should be alert to stressed employees and recommend help, before things get out of hand. In many companies, HR or EAP (employee assistance professionals) can provide you with resources and referrals.

TOOL #3- EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Popularized by psychologist Daniel Goleman, much research shows that increasing "EQ" is correlated with emotional control and increased workplace effectiveness.

What is "EQ" exactly? According to Goleman, it is "the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships."

Fortunately, skills to improve your emotional intelligence can be learned by both employees and management. The benefit is increased understanding of yourself and others which directly relates to increased productivity and workplace harmony.

TOOL #4- ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION Communication problems frequently lead to misunderstandings, conflicts with coworkers and hurt feelings which may hamper concentration and work performance.

Assertiveness is not aggression, but a way to communicate so that others clearly understand your needs, concerns, and feelings. It starts with the familiar advice to use "I" statements instead of "you" statements which can sound accusatory, and may lead to defensiveness instead of cooperation.

Other communication improvements include acknowledging the concerns and feelings of others in your interaction with them. And, being more sensitive to what others are saying to you "beneath the surface."

TOOL #6-ACCEPTANCE
While sometimes workplace anger is manifest in "exploding," other times it is born of grievances held by employees over any number of workplace issues. Much research shows that learning to accept and let go of the wrongs done to you can release your anger and resentment. This, in turn, may improve your health, and help you focus on your job instead of your negative feelings.

Is "acceptance" easy? Of course not. Nor does it mean that you think that whatever happened to you was right, or that you have to like the offending person. What it does mean is "letting go" of the negative feelings you now experience when you remember a negative experience or you encounter the offending person, so that it no longer affects you.

Europe's debt woes dominate G8 summit

CAMP DAVID, Maryland (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama pledged at a summit on Saturday to work with Europe on a package that balances growth with debt reduction as world leaders try to prevent the worsening euro zone crisis from destabilizing the global economy.

At the wooded Camp David retreat in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains, Obama and leaders from other major economic powers are seeking ways to soothe financial markets after worries about Spain's banking problems and the risk of a Greek exit from the euro zone sent world stocks to their lowest levels this year.

A shirt-sleeved Obama opened the morning session on the global economy at a rustic lodge, promising to seek ways to restore healthy growth and jobs and address concerns in Europe.

"All of us are absolutely committed to making sure that both growth and stability, and fiscal consolidation, are part of an overall package in order to achieve the kind of prosperity for our citizens we all are looking for," Obama said.

After an early morning meeting with Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron said he detected a "growing sense of urgency that action needs to be taken" on the euro zone crisis.

"Contingency plans need to be put in place and the strengthening of banks, governance, firewalls - all of those things need to take place very fast," he told reporters.

European Union leaders seemed keen to stress on Friday that they would stand firm in protecting their banks, after news of escalating bad loans raised the specter that rescuing Spain's banks would crash the euro zone's fourth largest economy.

"We will do whatever is needed to guarantee the financial stability of the euro zone," EU President Herman Van Rompuy said.

Earlier French President Francois Hollande suggested using European funds to inject capital into Spain's banks, which would mark a significant acceleration of EU rescue efforts.

Balancing a growth agenda with efforts to lower government debt through fiscal belt tightening is a crucial part of the G8 discussions. Obama has aligned himself with Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti and the new French president in putting more emphasis on growth.

That places pressure on German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has pushed fiscal austerity as a the prime means of bringing down huge debt levels that are burdening European economies.

Voters in euro zone countries have shown frustration with that approach, ejecting the Greek government and in France the conservative Nicolas Sarkozy was defeated by Hollande, a socialist, in the May 6 elections.

A draft of the summit communiqu? shown to Reuters will stress an "imperative to create growth and jobs."

There are signs of softening in Germany's austerity stance.

Its largest industrial union IG Metall struck its biggest pay deal in 20 years early on Saturday. The 4.3-percent pay increase, more than double Germany's inflation rate, will boost worker buying power in the euro zone's richest nation and lift consumption - something the United States long has urged as a means to bolster overall growth throughout the world's second largest economic region.

GLOBAL SECURITY

Also on the summit agenda are concerns about oil and food prices as well as Afghanistan, Iran, Syria and North Korea.

Speculation has grown that Obama will use an energy session at the G8 to seek support to tap emergency oil reserves before a European Union embargo of Iranian crude takes effect in July.

But with oil prices already sliding, a move by Obama to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve - alone or along with other countries - could expose him to criticism that the emergency supply should only be touched in a supply crisis.

The Camp David summit kicked off four days of intensive diplomacy that will test leaders' ability to quell unease over the threat of another financial meltdown as well as plans to wind down the unpopular war in Afghanistan.

After the Camp David talks wrap up late on Saturday afternoon, Obama will fly to his home town of Chicago where he will host a two-day NATO meeting at which the Afghanistan war will be the central topic.

95% First Position

All Critics (41) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (39) | Rotten (2)

A number of the performances are plain stunning - Aran and Joan, in particular, seem born to move - and in many ways watching the movie is like watching a sporting event; there are winners and losers and favorites to cheer on.

It's an intense journey, and Kargman captures it all, down to the dancers' bloodied and bruised feet.

Yes, it is possible to create a gripping documentary about the ballet world without resorting to "Black Swan" melodramatics.

Because its subjects are so driven and so talented, "First Position," which is about ballet, is more gripping than the norm.

It's in the quick audience-reaction shots of the young dancers' exultant parents and cringing private instructors that the movie finds its most nakedly human moments.

The film shows the grueling work it takes for young dancers like Zamora to look effortless on stage, and First Position shows teachers who range from supportive to borderline abusive.

It's 'Spartacus' en pointe.

Inspiring documentary about hardworking young dancers.

Almost loses its sense of good taste entirely in the final act, straining to build suspense and shape heroes. The bias hangs a little ugly in an otherwise passable, somewhat enlightening effort.

The cookie cutter format Kargman uses in presenting her subjects may be unoriginal but a safe way to introduce the filmmaker to her new audience.

Child ballet dancer and former journalist Bess Kargman brings a dancer's passion and insight to her directorial debut, illuminating the addictive magic and fierce demands of a ballet dancer's life.

Really, all of the dancers' evident passion for their art is, well, spellbinding.

These kids are proud of their tights.

Kargman follows the pre-established pattern of documentaries following competitions from crosswords to spelling bees, but the format works and she's found six kids ranging in age from 9 to 16 who are truly involving.

Magically upbeat and exhilarating in spirit. Particularly noteworthy is the way director Bess Kargman manages to address a few world issues with great hopefulness.

Documentaries don't have to be technically great to be irresistible, and Bess Kargman's First Position, which follows six young ballet dancers as they prepare for an elite competition, is a case in point.

Its enjoyment is not limited to dance aficionados.

Buying a car will mean that you are most likely going to be spending a whole lot of money to purchase it. As Facebook grows, millions say, 'no, thanks'

NEW YORK (AP) ? Don't try to friend MaLi Arwood on Facebook. You won't find her there.

You won't find Thomas Chin, either. Or Kariann Goldschmitt. Or Jake Edelstein.

More than 900 million people worldwide check their Facebook accounts at least once a month, but millions more are Facebook holdouts.

They say they don't want Facebook. They insist they don't need Facebook. They say they're living life just fine without the long-forgotten acquaintances that the world's largest social network sometimes resurrects.

They are the resisters.

"I'm absolutely in touch with everyone in my life that I want to be in touch with," Arwood says. "I don't need to share triviality with someone that I might have known for six months 12 years ago."

Even without people like Arwood, Facebook is one of the biggest business success stories in history. The site had 1 million users by the end of 2004, the year Mark Zuckerberg started it in his Harvard dorm room. Two years later, it had 12 million. Facebook had 500 million by summer 2010 and 901 million as of March 31, according to the company.

That staggering rise in popularity is one reason why Facebook Inc.'s initial public offering is one of the most hotly anticipated in years. The company's shares are expected to begin trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market on Friday under the ticker symbol "FB". Facebook is likely to have an estimated market valuation of some $100 billion, making it worth more than Kraft Foods, Ford or Disney.

Facebook still has plenty of room to grow, particularly in developing countries where people are only starting to get Internet access. As it is, about 80 percent of its users are outside U.S. and Canada.

But if Facebook is to live up to its pre-IPO hype and reward the investors who are clamoring for its stock this week, it needs to convince some of the resisters to join. Two out of every five American adults have not joined Facebook, according to a recent Associated Press-CNBC poll. Among those who are not on Facebook, a third cited a lack of interest or need.

If all those people continue to shun Facebook, the social network could become akin to a postal system that only delivers mail to houses on one side of the street. The system isn't as useful, and people aren't apt to spend as much time with it. That means fewer opportunities for Facebook to sell ads.

Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project, says that new communications channels ? from the telephone to radio, TV and personal computers ? often breed a cadre of holdouts in their early days.

"It's disorienting because people have different relationships with others depending on the media they use," Rainie says. "But we've been through this before. As each new communications media comes to prominence, there is a period of adoption."

Len Kleinrock, 77, says Facebook is fine for his grandchildren, but it's not for him.

"I do not want more distractions," he says. "As it is, I am deluged with email. My friends and colleagues have ready access to me and I don't really want another service that I would feel obliged to check into on a frequent basis."

Kleinrock says his resistance is generational, but discomfort with technology isn't a factor.

After all, Kleinrock is arguably the world's first Internet user. The University of California, Los Angeles professor was part of the team that invented the Internet. His lab was where researchers gathered in 1969 to send test data between two bulky computers ?the beginnings of the Arpanet network, which morphed into the Internet we know today.

"I'm having a 'been-there, done-that' feeling," Kleinrock says. "There's not a need on my part for reaching out and finding new social groups to interact with. I have trouble keeping up with those I'm involved with now."

Thomas Chin, 35, who works at an advertising and media planning company in New York, says he may be missing out on what friends-of-friends-of-friends are doing, but he doesn't need Facebook to connect with family and closer acquaintances.

"If we're going to go out to do stuff, we organize it (outside) of Facebook," he says.

Some people don't join the social network because they don't have a computer or Internet access, are concerned about privacy, or generally dislike Facebook. Those without a college education are less likely to be on Facebook, as are those with lower incomes. Women who choose to skip Facebook are more likely than men to cite privacy issues, while seniors are more likely than those 50-64 years old to cite computer issues, according the AP-CNBC poll.

About three-quarters of seniors are not on Facebook. By contrast, more than half of those under 35 use it every day.

The poll of 1,004 adults nationwide was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications May 3-7 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

Steve Jones, a professor who studies online culture and communications at the University of Illinois at Chicago, says many resisters consider Facebook to be too much of a chore.

"We've added social networking to our lives. We haven't added any hours to our days," Jones says. "The decision to be online on Facebook is simultaneously a decision not to be doing something else."

Jones says many people on Facebook try to overcome that by multitasking, but they end up splitting their attention and engaging with others online only superficially.

Arwood, 47, a restaurant manager in Chicago, says she was surprised when colleagues on an English-teaching program in rural Spain in 2010 opted to spend their breaks checking Facebook.

"I spent my time on break trying to learn more about the Spanish culture, really taking advantage of it," she says. "I went on walks with some of the students and asked them questions."

Kariann Goldschmitt, 32, a music professor at New College of Florida in Sarasota, Fla., was on Facebook not long after its founding in 2004, but she quit in 2010. In part, it was because of growing concerns about her privacy and Facebook's ongoing encouragement of people to share more about themselves with the company, with marketers and with the world.

She says she's been much more productive since leaving.

"I was a typical user, on it once or twice a day," she says. "After a certain point, I sort of resented how it felt like an obligation rather than fun."

Besides Facebook resisters and quitters, there are those who take a break. In some cases, people quit temporarily as they apply for new jobs, so that potential employers won't stumble on photos of their wild nights out drinking. Although Facebook doesn't make it easy to find, it offers an option for suspending accounts (Look for a link under the "Security" tab in "Account Settings.")

Goldschmitt says it takes effort to stay in touch with friends and relatives without Facebook. For instance, she has to make mental notes of when her friends are expecting babies, knowing that they have become so used to Facebook "that they don't engage with us anymore."

"I'm like, 'Hmmm, when is nine months?' I have to remember to contact them since they won't remember to tell me when the baby's born."

Neil Robinson, 54, a government lawyer in Washington, says that when his nephew's son was born, pictures went up on Facebook almost immediately. As a Facebook holdout, he had to wait for someone to email photos.

After years of resisting, Robinson plans to join next month, mostly because he doesn't want to lose touch with younger relatives who choose Facebook as their primary means of communication.

But for every Robinson, there is an Edelstein, who has no desire for Facebook and prefers email and postcards.

"I prefer to keep my communications personal and targeted," says Jake Edelstein, 41, a pharmaceutical consultant in New York. "You're getting a message that's written for you. Clearly someone took the time to sit down to do it."
