Multiple Sclerosis Blog - Everyday Health

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that, each of us knows, will/can/does change from day to day. With that fact set, it is important to understand where we are; maybe not from one day to the next, but certainly from one doctors visit to the next.

As this community is ever-growing and assuredly one of the most helpful online forums on the topic that I know of, I thought we might have an open discussion as to how you keep track of your MS. Many come to these pages when they first think they might have MS or hear the words we all know too well, ?you have Multiple Sclerosis?.

Like stepping on the scale every hour to see how you are doing with a weight loss goal, over analysis is far from a helpful evolution. While a daily inventory can be helpful in assessing our capabilities on one day versus another, 365 progress reports are more than I think we need.

Many of you use our monthly ?How?s Your MS Today?? blogs to keep account going back several years. Some use written journals and I?ve even heard (thought I don?t consider myself smart enough for a smart phone) of folks using different ?apps? on their smart devices to keep track.

This information can be useful in our daily life as well as when we visit our doctors.

As I am not always aware of how I appear to be coping with something MS (and I?m often not coping as well as I think I am), checking in with someone close to you may help in keeping tabs on our progression and our coping. While Caryn may not always tell me in the moment, I am sometimes surprised by her take on what?s going on with my mind and body.

We all keep track in some way; some more formally, some not so much. As well as sharing how you attend to the course of your MS, I?m wondering if you might also share how these observations might have helped.

The more we know about a life with MS, the better we can live our lives. Also, I find, the more I learn that I have yet to learn.

Wishing you and your family the best of health.

Cheers

Trevis

HTC One X might drop to $100 on contract at AT&T, tempt our wallets

HTC One X might drop to $100 on contract at AT&T, tempt our wallets

HTC might have turned green having seen the Galaxy S III steal the Android spotlight at AT&T, but it could be poised to use a classic trick to get the One X front and center once again: a price drop. An AT&T staff leak at XDA-Developers suggests the carrier is cutting the One X contract price in half to $100 on July 29th, putting it well under its Samsung rival and giving the similarly-priced Atrix HD no small amount of heat. Nothing's confirmed unless AT&T pulls the trigger, of course. If it does, we could see at least some shoppers deciding that HTC just makes more Sense (4.0) in the end.

Weaker demand pressures Dow Chemical 2Q

Dow Chemical CEO Andrew N. Liveris has a pretty bleak assessment of the world's economy, predicting that it could take until 2014 for growth to return to a normal pace.

Liveris said Thursday that deteriorating global business conditions caused a 34 percent drop in Dow Chemical's second-quarter net income. And he doesn't expect to see much improvement for the rest of this year.

"The new reality is that this world is not in a normal growth mode," he told analysts on a conference call. "And it does not appear that we will see this for at least 12 to 24 months."

A quarterly profit of 55 cents per share missed estimates and shares in the nation's largest chemicals maker fell 3.7 percent in afternoon trading. Liveris said volumes fell in most categories as demand dropped because of a "synchronized global economic slowdown." Customers were cautious about purchases because of uncertainty about where global growth is headed.

The Midland, Mich., manufacturer has a broad reach across industries and geographic regions, selling materials used in everything from televisions and paint to construction and agricultural products.

Since the end of the first quarter, economies have slowed in the U.S. and China. Some European countries have fallen into recession as the massive debt crisis there drags on. Manufacturing has declined in all three regions.

For the April-through-June quarter, Dow Chemical's earnings fell to $649 million. A year earlier, Dow earned $982 million, or 84 cents per share. Revenue dropped 10 percent to $14.51 billion. That's the company's first decline in revenue since the third quarter of 2009.

Analysts polled by FactSet forecast earnings of 64 cents per share and revenue of $15.69 billion.

Sales fell for materials used in electronics, energy, coatings and infrastructure. Sales also fell for performance materials, like polyurethane and epoxy. Performance plastic volumes rose but sales dropped because of a 9 percent decrease in prices.

One bright spot was agricultural products where sales rose 12 percent to a second-quarter record of $1.7 billion.

Overall, prices fell 5 percent, declining in all geographic regions. The biggest drop ? 8 percent ? was in Europe.

To contend with these conditions, Dow Chemical will ramp up its efforts to cut costs and reduce capital expenditures. Liveris said that the company will extend the time expected for it to reach near-term earnings targets but still expects to hit those targets.

Shares of Dow Chemical fell $1.09, or 3.6 percent, to close at $29.18 Thursday. Its shares have risen 42 percent since hitting a 52-week low of $20.61 in October but are still short of their high of $36.32 late last July.

Austria's religious leaders defend circumcision

VIENNA (Reuters) - Austria's Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim leaders united in defense of circumcision on Friday, condemning calls from two provincial leaders to limit the practice as an attack on religion and demanding that the government clarify its legality.

The row follows weeks of emotional debate and outrage in Germany where a regional court in Cologne banned the procedure on June 27 as physical abuse.

The Justice Ministry in Vienna has expressed surprise that a German verdict should be thought to have any relevance in Austria, and the health minister has played down the importance of what he called an overhyped debate imported from Germany.

Peter Schipka, general secretary of the Roman Catholic Austrian Bishops' Conference, told journalists on Friday: "We are concerned about all attempts to exploit the debate that has been triggered by the Cologne verdict to promote a hostile attitude in Austria towards Judaism, Islam or religion in general."

Protestant leader Michael Buenker noted there had been no similar attacks on other practices that were also physical interventions on children, such as ear piercing or vaccinations.

The right to religious freedom is protected in the Austrian constitution and can only be changed in law by a two-thirds majority in parliament.

Those seeking to ban circumcision argue a competing right to freedom from physical harm should take precedence, and that infants are unable to consent to being circumcised.

The four leaders called on the government to make a clear statement in defense of religious freedom and the lawfulness of male circumcision - an obligation in both Judaism and Islam.

Oskar Deutsch, leader of Austria's Jewish communities, said the law was clear that parents had a right to bring up their children in accordance with their faith.

"Nonetheless, the government is asked here very clearly to repeat this once more and to clarify that this will not be challenged in this country," he said.

A spokesman for Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann was not immediately available for comment.

Germany's lower house of parliament moved quickly to pass a motion protecting the religious circumcision of infant boys last week after the Cologne court verdict.

But an Austrian provincial chief nonetheless advised state-run hospitals this week to stop circumcisions, saying the legal position in Austria needed to be clarified, and the far-right governor of another province called for a federal ban.

According to the CIRCS organization, which collects global published data on circumcision, 37 percent of all males are circumcised. Few circumcisions are carried out in hospitals.

The four religious leaders said on Friday it was impossible to live in Austria as a Muslim or a Jew without the ability to practice traditions that were fundamental to religious identity.

Austria's Jewish community has shrunk to just 9,000, or about 1 percent of the population, from about 200,000 before Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938. A debate still simmers over whether the country was Hitler's first victim or a willing accomplice.

About half a million Muslims live in the country, many of them migrant workers from Turkey.

Deadlocked U.N. Security Council members lay blame over Syria

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Security Council members blamed each other for rising violence in Syria on Wednesday, with Western states pledging to also seek an end to the 16-month conflict outside the world body as Russia warned of "likely catastrophic consequences" with that approach.

Russia, an ally of Syria, and China have repeatedly blocked Western-backed Security Council attempts to increase pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to end the violence sparked by a government crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.

"The Syrian people will pay the price for this failure (to act)," Germany's U.N. Ambassador Peter Wittig told a U.N. Security Council debate on the Middle East on Wednesday.

With Russia and China pitted against their permanent veto-wielding counterparts the United States, Britain and France, the 15-member council is deadlocked and Washington has said it will seek ways to tackle the crisis in Syria outside the world body.

"Such a policy has been followed by Washington and a number of other capitals since the beginning of the crisis in Syria and this has significantly exacerbated it," Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told the council debate on the Middle East.

Churkin said Washington would "bear the responsibility for the likely catastrophic consequences of such steps."

"A situation where the opposition, a significant part of which does not wish to hear of dialogue, is told that it will be further helped - this contributes and leads to an escalation of confrontation," Churkin said.

The United States has said it will turn to alternatives such as the "Friends of Syria" grouping of allied countries to find ways to pressure Assad after the Security Council's failure to agree on consequences for Syria's violations of a peace plan brokered by the United Nations and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

"Since this Council failed to shoulder its responsibilities, the United States will continue to work with the (Friends of Syria)," Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Jeffrey DeLaurentis said on Wednesday.

He said Washington would work to increase pressure on the Syrian government, support the Syrian opposition, organize aid, and help prepare for a Syrian-led, democratic transition.

CLEAR CONSEQUENCES

Russia and China - who support each other on the council to protect their respective allies from interference - on Thursday vetoed a resolution that threatened Syrian authorities with sanctions if they did not stop using heavy weapons in towns because Russia said the threats by the council were one-sided.

"They are prepared to deny the council the ability to influence the situation for the better," Britain's U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant told the Security Council debate.

"The consequences are clear: further violence and bloodshed and a deteriorating situation that is now spilling over the borders," he said, referring to incursions by Syrian troops into Lebanon and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Assad's forces have killed more than 15,000 people since a crackdown on pro-democracy protesters began in March 2011, some Western leaders say. Damascus says rebels have killed several thousand of its security forces.

The Syrian army turned its forces on Aleppo on Wednesday, ordering an armored column to advance on the country's second largest city and pounding rebels there with artillery and attack helicopters, opposition activists said.

"The impotence to which the council has been confined by the Russian and Chinese vetoes does not leave the council without recourse," French U.N. Ambassador Gerard Araud told the council.

"We will continue our support to the Syrian people and the advent of a democratic transition," said Araud, adding that France would continue to support the opposition in Syria.

HTML5 is overhyped, no threat to native iOS and Android apps

Industry watchers often debate whether or not HTML5-based Web apps pose a threat to the massive ecosystems that revolve around native apps. According to a recent report from market research firm Strategy Analytics, the answer is a decisive ?no.? Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) have built huge economies that revolve around mobile apps, and analysts are always looking for a read on how modern Web standards like HTML5 might impact native apps. Strategy Analytics?s report suggests that rather than replace native apps, the advent of standards like HTML5 will result in the creation of a third category of hybrid apps.

?HTML5 is not the future of apps. While developers dream of ?write once run everywhere? the fragmented support for and limited APIs within HTML5 make this impossible,? said Strategy Analytics analyst Josh Martin. ?In fact, we predict the hybrid app is ??the future. Existing business models are protected, differentiation among and within ecosystems remains intact, and consumption continues unabated. The end result is the continued dominance of iOS, Android, and increasingly Windows Phone.?

The firm notes that services such as?PhoneGap, Sencha, Brightcove and Marmalade already allow developers to combine native app development with open Web standards like HTML5.

Obama to address National Urban League

SEATTLE (AP) ? President Barack Obama is addressing his most solidly supportive constituency, black voters, as he wraps up a four-day, five-state trip.

After a fundraising swing through the Seattle and Portland, Ore., Obama was flying to New Orleans on Wednesday to address the National Urban League, a civil rights group.

While enthusiasm among some Obama supporters has faded since 2008, support for America's first black president remains high among African-Americans. In a recent Associated Press-GfK poll, 82 percent of black adults said they would vote for Obama. His approval rating among blacks was 87 percent.

Obama skipped an appearance at the NAACP earlier this month, raising questions about whether his campaign was taking black voters for granted. The White House blamed a scheduling conflict and sent Vice President Joe Biden to address the nation's oldest civil rights organization instead.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney also addressed the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, raising eyebrows when he told the crowd: "If you want a president who will make things better in the African-American community, you are looking at him."

The audience booed the presumptive Republican nominee when he said he would repeal "Obamacare" ? the name critics use for Obama's health care overhaul ? if elected.

Obama also was raising campaign money at two separate stops while in New Orleans: an intimate 20-person event at the cost of $25,000 per person, and a larger event at the House of Blues for 400 people, with tickets starting at $250.

Obama raised at least $6 million at events this week in California, Oregon and Washington. The president started the trip Sunday with a stop in Colorado to meet with survivors and families of the victims of last week's movie theater massacre.

RIVERSIDE: Rufus Wainwright, Blues Traveler top Fox music lineup ...

Posted on | July 19, 2012 | Comments

Rufus Wainwright has been announced as one of the artists playing the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside this fall. (AP PHOTO)

The Fox Performing Arts Center has announced its fall season for 2012 and a couple of shows for 2013 and we?re seeing some newer acts come through the area as well as some returning ones. Fielding has a story with the full lineup of entertainment, but I wanted to take minute and look at the music.

The biggest highlight of the season in my mind is Rufus Wainwright, who comes to the Fox on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Wainwright has played venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. I think he is exactly the kind of artist who should play the Fox. He has a devoted following, his music will shine in a theater setting and I think the Fox?s sound system will serve him well.

His concert also has a shot at luring those out-of-towners that the city of Riverside touted the Fox would bring since Wainwright?s only remotely close date at this point is Tuesday, Oct. 9 in Santa Barbara.

Blues Traveler is playing the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside.

Another one of the highlights is a night I shall call ?Harmonica Fever.? In reality, the Fox is calling it ?A Big Night of Blues and Rock.? Headlining the show will be Fox newbie Blues Traveler, who will bring harmonicas and ?Run Around? Riverside on Thursday Sept. 20. They will be supported by Fox vets the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Riverside?s own Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers.

I think that bill is diverse enough to attract a mix of blues and rock fans. I wonder if you can bring your own harmonica in for this date.

Then, Three Dog Night is playing Friday, Sept. 28 and the group famous for hits like ?Joy to the World? and ?Mama Told Me Not to Come? will complete its trifecta of Northern I.E. theatres. They played both the Lewis Family Playhouse in Rancho Cucamonga and the California Theatre of the Performing Arts in San Bernardino in the past. The group also played the city of Beaumont?s July 4th celebration in 2011.

On Friday, Oct. 19, ?This is the ?60s? takes over. It?s being billed as ?A Live Multimedia Musical Experience.? That makes me think it may be along the lines of ?Rain? and Jason Bonham?s Led Zeppelin Experience.

We?ll continue to time travel when ?90s band Tonic plays Saturday, Nov. 3. The press release promises a special co-headliner for the show to be announced later, too. My first guess would be Blues Traveler, but they?re already on the bill. Has anyone seen Third Eye Blind around? What about Marcy Playground? They would be a good match. You know Tonic from the hit ?If You Could Only See? and the 2012 Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival.

On Friday, Nov. 9, we?ll get returning act America with openers the Little River Band. All that?s missing is Firefall.

On Sunday, Nov. 18, it?s a folk bonanza with Judy Collins and Roger McGuinn, of Byrds fame. Now?s a good time for a blog singalong break.

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)

Moving on, we?re getting another show on Friday Nov. 30 that?s super secret right now because of contract negotiations, according to the Fox?s press release. We?ll get the announcement in early September, but it?s being billed as ?A Spectacular ?80s Rock Show.?

My guesses: Pat Benatar and/or The Go-Go?s. In my wildest dreams I want it to be Duran Duran. Who do you think it will be?

And we have two shows for the 2013 calendar, too. It?s classic rock-tastic.

Dennis DeYoung brings ?The Music of Styx Live in Concert? to the Fox on Friday, March 1. I have four words to say about this: ?Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto.?

Then, Foreigner, who has played everywhere from area casinos to Ontario?s Citizens Business Bank Arena, will perform on Saturday, April 20. Yes, that means I will get to write about ?Aqua Teen Hunger Force? and the Foreigner belt again.

Tickets for the shows will start to go on sale Friday, Aug. 3. You can pick them up at the Fox Box Office or on Ticketmaster.

So tell us, what do you think of the lineup? Are there any shows you want to see? Do you think it appeals to more audiences than previous seasons?

?

Congress can't resist allure of presidential race

(AP) ? The Senate is spending this week debating, and summarily rejecting, Democratic-written bills to disclose the names of people who give more than $10,000 to help elect people such as, say, Mitt Romney, and to take away tax breaks from companies taken over by people such as, say, Mitt Romney, who move operations overseas.

Their latest effort, unveiled Wednesday, would make candidates for federal office, like, say, Mitt Romney, disclose any of their financial holdings in offshore tax havens, such as Bermuda or the Cayman Islands.

Senate Democrats certainly aren't alone in devoting congressional workdays to bills attacking the other party's presidential candidate.

House Republicans last week voted to repeal President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. Next week, they plan to vote on freezing all of former President George W. Bush's tax cuts for another year, including those on the top 2 percent, whom Obama says should pay more. On Wednesday, the House passed a GOP bill ordering Obama to specify how many thousands of defense workers will lose their jobs if the deficit-cutting deal he and Republicans negotiated a year ago stands.

Congress is just two weeks away from a five-week August recess, with plenty of critical issues hanging over the Capitol. But neither party seems able to resist the allure of presidential politics. As tourists crowd the galleries to escape a record heat wave, lawmakers in both parties bash their opponents and push quixotic bills even as they complain about key work not being done.

On Wednesday, Democratic Sens. Dick Durbin and Carl Levin took the floor to speak out against the use of offshore tax havens and tout their bill to make candidates for federal office lay out financial holdings they or their spouses have in any offshore account. Both senators carried on, seemingly in earnest, never letting on that the legislation mirrored Obama's recent attacks against Romney's use of offshore bank accounts.

Legislatively, the Senate spent all day debating whether to debate Democrats' Bring Jobs Home Act, which would take away tax breaks for companies that outsource jobs overseas ? another Obama attack line against Romney. It prompted a withering reply from GOP leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

"What are we doing here? Is the Senate a messaging machine?" he said on the Senate floor. "Or are we doing the basic work of the government?"

McConnell may object. But his GOP colleagues in the House are hardly plowing through a nonpartisan to-do list.

House Republican leaders actually left the Capitol on Wednesday, walking a block to Republican National Committee headquarters, expressly to weigh in on the elections. Speaker John Boehner told reporters that Obama's criticism of Romney's business career and refusal to disclose more tax returns are a distraction from the administration's stewardship of the wobbly economy.

"The American people are asking, 'Where are the jobs?'" Boehner said. "They're not asking where the hell the tax returns are."

Obama's questions about when, exactly, Romney left Bain Capital amount to an "attack on the private sector," Boehner said, and show that Obama "doesn't give a damn about middle-class Americans who are out there looking for work."

The House's official business Wednesday also seemed designed to put the president on the spot.

With an overwhelming 414-2 vote, Republicans pushed to passage a bill requiring Obama to lay out in full detail how he would implement nearly $1 billion in spending cuts next year ? half of them in Pentagon accounts ? agreed to last summer during the debt ceiling debate. Republicans are trying to use the issue against Obama, maintaining that any right-thinking commander in chief wouldn't undermine the military with deep defense cuts.

Republicans as well as Democrats backed the legislation that called for $487 billion in defense cuts over 10 years, plus the automatic cuts of about $492 billion in projected spending if a bipartisan congressional committee failed to come up with $1.2 trillion in savings. The panel was unsuccessful.

Wednesday's efforts from the GOP-controlled House came about a week after a bill to repeal Obama's signature health care legislation was rushed to the House floor for a vote. It passed on a largely party-line vote, but with full knowledge that the Democratic-controlled Senate isn't likely to even look at it.

San Bernardino Bankruptcy: City Declares Fiscal Emergency

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- San Bernardino declared a fiscal emergency Wednesday night, allowing the city to avoid a lengthy mediation process and head straight to federal bankruptcy court.

The declaration comes after the city announced last week that it would seek Chapter 9 protection, making it the third California city in recent weeks to make the rare move.

The City Council voted 5-2 to declare the emergency and file for bankruptcy protection amid a dire cash crunch that has officials worried San Bernardino can't meet payroll in August.

The vote was followed by another authorizing the city attorney to file for bankruptcy, but it was not clear when the planned filing would come.

Councilmen Chas Kelley and John Valdivia dissented on both votes.

Councilman Fred Shorett, who voted against bankruptcy last week, reversed his position Wednesday night and approved both moves.

"The horse is out of the barn ? the whole world knows we're insolvent," Shorett said, according to the San Bernardino Sun. "I will be supporting going forward with Chapter 9 and fiscal emergency."

The vote could make the city of 210,000 people the third in California to seek bankruptcy protection since last month, following Stockton and Mammoth Lakes.

The city is facing a $45.8 million budget shortfall this year.

Last week's announcement of the bankruptcy plan has further stressed San Bernardino's finances by prompting a dozen employees to put in for retirement with hopes of cashing out accrued vacation and sick time, and it has spurred vendors to demand cash instead of credit, said Gwendolyn Waters, a spokeswoman for the city manager's office.

The debate over bankruptcy in San Bernardino has also raised questions about the city's financial management. Last week, City Attorney James Penman told the public that 13 of the last 16 budgets presented to the city council had been falsified, masking the city's deficit. The finance director, who is new to the job, said officials had borrowed cash from restricted funds to cover payments, and eventually ran out of money to pay the funds back.

Officials say the housing crisis ? which walloped property and sales tax revenues ? and the loss of state redevelopment funds took a toll on the city's budget. San Bernardino is located about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

Fly In Fly Out ? FIFO Lifestyle on Mining Camps in Australia ...

fly in fly fifo out australia mining jobs

What are the common issues and challenges with regards health and fitness on mine sites?

The common issues and challenges for?fly in fly out?(FIFO) workers regarding health and fitness in mining arise from a combination of work related factors including work time, rosters, shift work and external stressors including being away from family and friends for extended periods. These factors aren?t unique on their own, but is the combination of these factors that in my opinion have strongly contributed to the overwhelming health statistics we are currently seeing in Australian mining.

Probably the most common barrier to a healthy lifestyle (exercise and healthy eating) is lack of time. This isn?t unique to mining and is the most common perceived barrier throughout society, however in mining it does ring true to an extent. Most employees on site are working 12-12.5 hour days. Obviously the?FIFO worker?needs to be awake to get ready before work and finish after. That means that work is taking 13-14 hours of their day. We know the average person needs 7-9 hours sleep each day. Add the hours awake for work with the hours required for sleep and we are left with a narrow window of time. For residential employees the additional external challenges including family, cooking, cleaning, shopping etc mean in my opinion they are more time poor than?FIFO workers. FIFO workers still have family who they will often call, Skype or message each night but don?t have the other requirements on their time.

Other common issues include the lure of alcohol and never ending food. The wet mess is often located right next to food facilities, is a place for socializing, where most camp events are held and with drinks at discounted prices, the financial burden of a regular drinking habit is lessened. This coupled with easy access to prepared food of which there is no limit, gives good reasoning to the shocking statistic of ? of employees being statistically overweight or obese.

Where are the opportunities for improvement?

There is always room for improvement, however I think mining companies today are identifying these opportunities more efficiently now. As well as identifying opportunities for improvement, companies are readily implementing changes to try to minimise and reverse health issues in mining.

This shift can largely be attributed to a better understanding of health. Health is no longer a standalone issue, but is now understood to have importance when it comes to safety and productivity.

Mining studies have shown:

  • Healthy employees are 3 times more effective than unhealthy workers.
  • Unhealthy employees work 49 effective hours per month compared to healthy?workers? 143 hours a month.
  • 18 days annual sick leave is taken by unhealthy workers compared to only 2 days for healthy employees.
  • Healthy employees are less likely to suffer from fatigue and sleeping disorders
  • Healthy worker have fewer injuries and if injured, return to work more quickly
  • Work performance can be improved by 4 to 15 percent if employees participate in regular physical activity.
  • Healthy employees have a better ability to access and egress infrastructure during emergencies

It is with this understanding that we have seen improvements in both the facilities and services. These changes are aimed at taking a more proactive approach towards employee health.?FIFO exercise facilities?now aim to cater to a larger population. As well as this Mine sites are now backing proactive health services and screens on site. Here in Tom Price our annual health calendar includes bowel cancer screening, flu vaccination, comprehensive onsite health assessments, smoking talks and consults, skin cancer screening, prostate screening, men?s health month, women?s health month, dietician clinics, fun runs and on site health challenges.

I think as opportunities are recognised for improvement, companies will continue to endeavour to change existing behaviours.

What are the common stresses and demands of the FIFO mining lifestyle on FIFO workers?

  1. Maintaining healthy relationships with family and friends. Adequate contact and making time each day to stay in touch.
  2. Sharing the workload with partners when at home and at work
  3. Maintaining healthy habits at home and at work
  4. Traditionally long swings (starting to change now)
  5. Affects on children and partners at home
  6. Missing important events (birthdays, kids births, anniversaries)
  7. Lack of support for FIFO families
  8. Routines when at home and when at work can be disruptive to normal family routines
  9. Your annual leave can be dictated by roster
  10. Difficulty in accessing health and financial services on certain rosters
  11. Managing fatigue at work and at home
  12. Travel time (interstate FIFO)

Has the attitude towards mine site fitness and FIFO camps changed and how?

The attitude towards mine site fitness and the wider topic of health has changed immensely. The facilities and services have evolved as the links between employee health and their safety is better understood.

The benefits of exercise and fitness on mental and physical health are immense. It is an excellent fatigue management tool. Provides hormone stabilisation and synthesis (helpful in people who are suffering from stress, anxiety and/or depression). Increases confidence and increases social interaction. It is with this understanding and the knowledge of the affects of health on safety and production that is leading to a far more holistic approach when it comes to employee health.

FIFO camps?still provide exercise facilities to employees, however we are now seeing a far greater diversity in these facilities. They aren?t just gyms but now include golf driving ranges, tennis courts, basketball courts, cricket pitches, swimming pools and boxing areas. This variety is largely due to the understanding that a larger population will now utilise these facilities than a traditional gym.

As well as this Mine sites are now backing proactive health services and screens on site. These include bowel cancer screening, flu vaccination, comprehensive onsite health assessments, smoking talks and consults, skin cancer screening, prostate screening, men?s health month, women?s health month, dietician clinics, fun runs and on site health challenges.

The term fitness is now understood to be far more encompassing than a person just being able to run a certain distance, instead fitness refers to physical and psychological fitness for work. It is this understanding that has shifted the approach towards mine site fitness.

Is fatigue management part of the challenge and how do you overcome this?

Fatigue is definitely a part of the challenge.

As spoken about in one of your earlier questions there are many tasks throughout the day which require a time commitment, unfortunately we often see people overreaching and eating into their sleep time. This coupled with length of swings, unidentified sleep issues and shift work mean fatigue is a far more complex issue than it appears on the surface.

We understand that fatigue is extremely important when it comes to miners fitness and their safety. A person 17 hours awake has the same cognitive abilities of a person who is 0.05% BAC. Training, obstructive sleep identification and regular talks on fatigue issues aim to ensure that fatigue is always being looked at.

We have sleep screening which is available to all employees. This screening looks to identify sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnoea and then initiate appropriate measures to assist people who are identified as having issues. This can range from simply weight loss through to the application of a positive pressure device (CPAP).

Unfortunately there is no gold standard when it comes to length of swings and how shift work is put into these swings. One thing is understood fairly well is that is the traditional shifts need to be looked at. We are now seeing a shift from long swings and short breaks towards a more even time roster and this is one of the ways in which companies are attempting to minimise fatigue related issues caused by shift length.

Fatigue training is also conducted and is actually becoming a mandatory qualification for all employees. In this training sleep psychologists present training to groups of employees. Dependant on a person?s position within the business the length of training and its focuses is varied. Some of the focal points of the training include:

  • Eating and sleep
  • Affects of stimulants and suppressants on sleep
  • Sleep debt
  • Healthy behaviours
  • Identifying fatigue
  • Risks associated with fatigue etc

Due to the multi faceted nature of fatigue it is an issue that will never be completely removed from mining, however mining companies are taking proactive steps in this field.

How do you combat the fact that unhealthy choices still, and will probably always, exist?

Unhealthy options will always exist, as well as this, the rate and amount of these unhealthy foods we are consuming will probably remain on the rise. I think education is still the best tool to combat this as well as a shift in peoples mentality.

A lot of people think that health is a given. This is no longer the case as unhealthy food/drink options become more prevalent, more unhealthy and cheaper. The food landscape that we live in is constantly changing however people are understanding and recognising these changes very differently to as short as ten years ago.

The amount of news articles on coke and its negative health impacts are amazing. From the get go people understand coke and other soft drinks are unhealthy as they have been told from a young age. If they choose to still drink them that is their decision, however at least they have made an informed one. This same level of education is not uniform, I am amazed as to how many food and drink products are ?slipping through?.

A perfect example is energy drinks. Rockstar when released in Australia 6 years ago was 9.6 grams of sugar per 100ml and came in a 473ml can. Today this same drink now has 16 grams per 100ml and comes in both 500ml and 750ml versions. This change was never advertised and now in?one 500ml can?a person is able to have?98%?of their RDI in sugar. Another example is flavoured milks. Some variations contain more than 2000kJ of energy, (approx ? RDI of energy for men and approx 1/3 RDI for women) most coming from sugar and fat.

With proper education people are able to make informed choices based on more than just the availability, ease of intake and taste. Nutrition labels are there for people who care. People need to take charge of their own health and investigate the things they are consuming to see whether they are in fact healthy or unhealthy choices.

What tips and tricks can you offer our readers and FIFO workers?to help them to make better choices?

  1. Start with small goals: It is unfortunate but I think the biggest loser has given the majority of people an unachievable illusion as to what rate and level of weight loss they can expect. Current thoughts on weight loss by physicians is that weight loss exceeding 1-2 kilograms per month is unlikely to be maintained for a long period of time, and has most probably been attained through unhealthy behaviours.
  2. Don?t fight the battle with only 50% of the army:?Exercise is just as important as diet. The equation is one of the most simple in the world. Energy in (diet) and Energy out (exercise and homeostasis) are the two elements in this equation. Trying to do it all with only one of these elements will hamper your ability to achieve your goals, slow the rate of your achievements and also reduce the likelihood of the changes ?sticking? long-term.
  3. The small things really do make a big difference:?If your small vice is something simple like a Kit Kat Chunky each day of the week, by the end of the week you will have brought in almost 10,000 kilojoules of empty calories. For adult males and females this is well above one day?s RDI of energy (almost double the average adult females). If you had a bar only every second day that is still more than a month worth of empty calories you have eaten by the end of the year.
  4. Between black and white there is grey:?I see people go through ebbs and flows with their diet and exercise. Often I think waning in adherence and interest to a healthy diet and exercise is brought on by the overzealous attitude towards these things prior. Put simply, people go to hard, burn themselves out and then fall off the bandwagon, often ending up worse than when they started. Gradual change is a more maintainable. If you haven?t exercised for a long time don?t immediately get into 7 day/week training. Build up to it.
  5. With food the more you take away, the more you want it:?Have a cheat day that you can look forward to. This often stops those bad foods and drinks creeping back into your daily diet.
  6. Listen to your body: If you have aches and pains get them seen to rather than letting them become something that will have you out of action for a long period.
  7. Carbs are not your enemy:?at 15.2 kJ/gram they are the lowest energy food per gram when compared to protein (16kJ/gram), Fat (36kJ/gram) and alcohol (29kJ/gram). Research healthy carbohydrate rich foods. Things like vegetables are hard to overindulge in and are important sources of carbohydrates, one of my favourites is sweet potato.
  8. When asked what surprised him most about the human race, the dalai llama answered with this:

?the fact that humans sacrifice their health to achieve wealth their whole working lives, only to sacrifice their wealth to reattain their health later in life?

Don?t let this statement ring true for you. Brushing your teeth is no fun but you do it to make sure your teeth don?t rot. Exercise does the same thing for your body?s systems. Get at least 30 mins a day and when you retire you won?t have to live a life determined by your health.

Intelligent car takes the wheel to dodge trouble

Will Ferguson, contributor

A new intelligent navigation system could keep your car on the road and away from obstacles even when you're not paying attention.

Sterling Anderson and Karl Iagnemma of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Robotic Mobility Group have developed an "intelligent co-pilot" that uses an onboard camera and laser rangefinder to identify hazards in a vehicle's environment.

The system identifies obstacles in the path of the vehicle and charts the best course around them. It returns control to the human operator once it decides that car and driver are safely out of harm's way.

The system can drive a car completely on its own, but Anderson says the genius of his robotic co-pilot is its ability to seamlessly share control with its flesh-and-blood counterpart behind the wheel.

"Full autonomy is simpler than enabling a car to collaborate with a human," Anderson says. "In this system, we have to accommodate for the human's input as well, making sure that the automated system kicks in only in dangerous situations."

Anderson says if a driver didn't know their car was equipped with the system, they would probably think they had pulled off a spectacular feat behind the wheel.

Researchers have tested the system with a variety of vehicles, ranging from a remote-controlled utility buggy to a Type S Jaguar at Ford's track in Dearborn, Michigan. So far, it works up to speeds of 48 kilometres per hour.

The next step in the research is tailoring the system to a driver's ability. "We want this to be useful for the beginning driver and the guys who like the smell of octane and burning rubber," Anderson says.

Anderson says he would put the system between $5000 and $10,000 when it hits the market. This won't be for some time, though, he added - five years at the least. The group presented details of the safety system at the 2012 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium in Madrid, Spain.

Madonna 'faces legal action' after depicting ... - BBC World News

Madonna has been threatened with legal action after a swastika was pasted onto the forehead of French political party leader Marine Le Pen during her live show in France. Madonna caused a stir in France by suggesting National Front leader Marine Le Pen is a Nazi (Picture: EPA) Madge, who is embarking on her MDNA world tour, used the image during the song Nobody Knows Me, which featured the singer?s face on a screen interchanged with the faces of various political leaders and notable public figures. The shot that caused outrage was when her face was mixed with Le Pen?s, followed by the flashing of the Nazi symbol in a peeled away ?strip? of the party leader?s forehead. Mail Online reports that 43-year-old Le Pen had previously slammed the Girl Gone Wild singer for using shock tactics to stay relevant while performing in Israel. She said: ?We understand how old singers who need to get people talking about them go to such extremes. If she does that in France, we?ll be waiting?. The image mixed Madonna?s face with Le Pen?s showing a Swastika on her forehead National Front sources added that the entire party was offended by the stunt. ?We are not a Nazi party and object to be depicted as such? they told Mail Online. ?If you accuse the National Front of being anti-Semitic and racist then you accuse a fifth of the French people of being anti-Semitic and racist. If Madonna repeats this slur in France then she will certainly be taken to court?. Madonna caused uproar in Israel when she appeared on stage brandishing a machine gun, leading concert-goers to believe she was glamorising violence. The MDNA tour comes to Hyde Park in London on July 17. VIDEO: Madonna performing Nobody Knows Me

The Best Internet Business: Business Designs Do Change ? Internet ...

I have been marketing online for a few years now and I am continually asked simply by my individuals and folks checking out different successful opportunities what are the best online business is. My personal reply is definitely the same, ?The plan doesn?t matter; your skill to market will.?

Now is this totally accurate? Zero, not fully. Programs are not all likewise and to compare one business model to another is much like comparing apples to a melon. An affiliate program requires distinct skills than does an mlm program and whether you create money with either one comes down to how good you are able perform a few things like locating a focused audience, generating those skilled visitors to a web site and converting a percentage of the visitors in to customers as well as team members.

Ultimately, it?s really down to whether or not you?ll be able to effectively promote your product, program or possibility. Let?s be honest the following, if you don?t know how to drive traffic and convert the idea, you are belly up right now.

With nevertheless, when it comes to packages, for my personal money the top internet business prospect out there is a network marketing business. Multilevel marketing? Oh yeah, let me explain.

Now I am aware that for many people, only the mention of multi-level marketing will send chills up your spine, persons it immediately revives memories associated with front packing and auto-ships coming from hell, not a pretty picture. So although many a annoyed, would-be business owners are generally holding down your lunch break, let me explain why mlm, or the business design anyway, is the best internet business product to work with.

First, let?s get one thing straight, if you have failed in your prior attempts to make a network marketing business, it is most likely certainly not your wrong doing. Up until a short while ago the Network marketing industry trained its users to build his or her organizations using typical revenue methods that traditional firms had utilised forever * and still do ? to get leads and also to contact people prospects along with ?sell? to them and most people, concerning 70% of the population of The united states do not wish to be removed to or sell some thing to anyone else.

We have all heard the old make a list of your family and friends. Just the considered talking to my personal long-lost 2nd rank ?best friend? to get your ex into my own brand paddling new business prospect makes us cringe! However, we do should sell, so, just how do we get around the fact that most of us cannot market or anyway don?t want to seem like we are offering something in order to someone?

By developing systems this also is where your network marketing business begins to look so good. Let?s go back to the actual affiliate marketing opportunity. Let me clear the air here and also tell you that there is nothing wrong precisely what so actually with affiliate marketing, I know a number of people who are successful with this type of company, but it?s tougher to succeed together with affiliate marketing than it is with mlm. Huh? Yep, you heard right.

If I need to learn how to bring customers online, after that doesn?t it make sense which i send that will traffic somewhere where I can get the ?biggest beat for our buck?? With an affiliate marketer or recommendation program I?ve got to send people to a site or capture web page over and over well as over and over. This never halts. I need to turn twenty or thirty people a week to get an income I could live on and if I?m changing twenty as well as thirty a week that means I need to be driving hundreds a week to a capture page or my website. With a home business if I turn thirty site visitors over a occupation, I can turn out to be wealthy.

We can also set up techniques online that people can push our site visitors to and enable these systems to ?sell? our chance or merchandise to people that are already seeking them. Lastly, network marketing can keep the promise that the average man or woman can succeed with this particular model.

Finally, when it comes to training perhaps you have figured out however why it can be very expensive to learn how to industry online? Perhaps you have figured out exactly why marketers gives you ?some? training, however seem to maintain some important information rear? It?s is due to competition. If I teach you everything I possibly know about marketing online then I?d better you should always be not within the same industry as I am or even that you are in my network marketing business. Otherwise, teaching you how to marketplace online is damaging to my personal marketing attempts because We have simply made my own levels of competition and if you aren?t in my down-line, exactly why would My spouse and i ever accomplish that? If you are in my organization, my down-line, then yes, I am going to teach you everything I know about advertising and marketing my business on the internet and hope that you just become more skillful than myself.

The reasons which i have discussed above, prospecting, lead conversions, marketing as well as training are generally why My partner and i still think that the home business is the best internet business around. While it is not easy to develop a MLM organization, it?s no more difficult as compared to driving lots a week to an affiliate program as well as some online shop. The main difference, this also may be the most significant factor in identifying the best internet business, is that built-in ?residual? element of a network marketing software, which another reason to get involved in MLM to begin with.
